Achilleion Palace constitutes one of the most well-known royal mansions within Europe and one of the most significant sights on Corfu. Located in the settlement of Gastouri, about 10km away from Corfu town, this palace was designed by Italian architects and built by the Empress of Austria, Elisabeth or Sissy, in 1890. The dominant theme in this palace is about heroes from Greek mythology, mostly Achilles and Nine Muses. After the death of Elisabeth the Palace was purchased by the Emperor of Austria Wilhelm II.
